Udayanaachaarya Udayanacharya or Udayakara, a Brahmana logician of Mithila wrote a sub-gloss on Vachaspati's work called the Nyaya-vaartika-taatparya-tiikaa-parishuddhi. He wrote several other works such as the Kusumanjali, Atma-tattva-viveka, Kiranaavali and Nyaya-parishishhta (also called Bodha siddhi or Bodha shuddhi).
Kumarila Bhatta is pre-Sankaran, but the onlysignificant Nyaya philosopher called Udayana was a post-Sankaranpersonality। The tradition is that he and Sriharsha's father werecontemporaries। This Udayanacharya should have lived around 1000 CE, atleast two hundred years after Sankaracharya।
The real heroes of the battle-royale were not Sankara Bhagavatpada or theAzhwars or Sri.Ramanujacharya but UdayanAchArya ( a "tArkika-n") andKumarilabhatta (a "mImAmsaka-n").
To the "mImAmsakA-s" the Buddhist's summary rejection of Vedic ritualismwas the proverbial red rag waved under the nose of a raging bull !Kumarilabhatta, it can be seen, has written copiously criticising theBuddhist's distaste for Vedic ritualism। He and UdayanAchArya were chieflyresponsible for the failure of Buddhism to acquire a large following inthe country।(Scholars mention here the texts of "tarkapAdam" ofKumarilabhatta andthe "bauddhadhikAram" by UdayanAchAryA)।The Vedantins came much later and there was no need for them to launchanother assault on Buddhism whose influence on the common people of Indiawas already waning।
